Read Proverbs 21
Consider Verse 2
“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes”
We find here:
1) A Characteristic of Conceit –
Conceit in this situation is an excessively favorable opinion of ones own understanding or perception concerning a matter.
It’s the type of self analysis that refuses to admit that possibly one could be wrong about someone or a situation they have already predetermined to know all of the conclusions to.
It’s the persuasion coupled with the presumption that we’re right without the consideration of possibly being wrong.
It’s the insistence that we think we are right even when spiritual counsel or the scriptures tell us we’re not.
Which when you give it serious thought, is purely arrogance in its simplest terms.
2) A Concept To Consider –
“but the Lord pondereth the hearts.”
Simply put, only the Lord is omniscient! He knows what we can’t know, which is the heart of the matter.
In contrast to us, “all things are naked and open to His holy eyes”. (Hebrews 4)
Conclusion: One of the great curses on humanity is every persons arrogant confidence in his or her own opinions.
Isaiah 5:21 says: “Woe to them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight.”
It would be wise for us not to attempt to justify our ‘every way’ or every opinion or perception.
Instead let the ‘Word from God’ and the ‘Spirit of God’ help keep this inherent depravity in check lest it blind us to our blunders and violate the instruction found in Jeremiah 9:23 that says: “let not the wise man glory in his wisdom”.
