Read Proverbs 26
(Review Vs 4 and 5)
1) A Contrast not A Contradiction –
“Answer not a fool according to his folly” (Verse 4)
“Answer a Fool according to his folly” (Verse 5)
These 2 sayings compliment instead of contradict each other.
The latter part of each verse holds the key of interpretation.
2) To Challenge or To Close Ones Mouth –
Verse 4 pertains to foolish comments that should be ignored
Verse 5 refers to foolish ideas that need to be corrected
Sometimes a fool must be refuted for their own good: “lest he be wise in his own conceit” or they think their opinion to be superior to Gods truth!
Sometimes a fool should not be responded to for our own good: “lest thou also be like unto him” or that we respond in a manner that makes us look and act as foolishly as does the fool.
Caution: It takes the wisdom and the governance of the Holy Spirit to determine when to apply Verse 4 or Verse 5.
Warning: From experience and scripture we know the damage that can occur when we misunderstand which of these principles to apply.
May we never try to justify our response when we fail to respond correctly!
Have A God Conscious Day!
